The Institut d’Etudes Supérieures des Arts (IESA), based in Paris, was created in 1985 by Jean-Marie and Françoise Schmitt, and is recognised by the French Ministry of Culture and Communications. IESA is involved in the training and education of art experts and cultural professionals and managers. It now boasts over 11000 alumni working in all aspects of the art world. IESA offers three major areas of study to students at both undergraduate level - the Art Market, Cultural Management and Multimedia Communication and post-graduate level.
The diploma was recognized by the French state in 1991 at level III and in 2003 at level II with the following title : Spécialiste-Conseil en biens et services culturels. Students are trained in the analysis of works of art as well as to carry out research as professionals. The composition of the award panel, under the direction of a museum curator, reflects these two types of complementary approaches.
In parallel, IESA has created an ever-expanding network across national borders to give the students the widest possible range of opportunities to broaden their understanding of and expertise within the art world. In 2007, IESA obtained the Erasmus Charter which allows students to get credit from all European universities, colleges and schools possessing the same accreditation. Due to the quality of its courses, IESA created partnership with prestigious universities and art institution, such as the University of Warwick and Whitechapel in England and Jacksonville University in Florida.
